Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced on May 2 that it won US$550 million worth of order to build a drill ship from Norwegian ocean energy development firm Ferncliff Drilling AS. This will be the worlds largest drill ship ever to be built. A drill ship is an offshore drilling facility that prospects for crude oil and gas in deep sea area where it is impossible to build sea platforms, and areas with severe winds. It is a high value added ship, the orders of which are recently increasing helped by surging international oil prices. The drill ship has recently emerged as a key driver of the global marine facility market.
