With hope of finding the 26 missing crew of the ill-fated Greek bulk carrier the Alexandros T all but abandoned at the weekend, it has emerged that the ship failed a 2003 safety inspection. The inspection by the US Coast Guard found a number of glaring structural and mechanical faults in the 17-year-old, 299-metre-long vessel. It has not yet been established what caused the Alexandros T to break up and sink 300 nautical miles off Port Elizabeth last Wednesday night.
