A 623-foot cargo ship that ran aground yesterday cleared the reef after high tide swept in early this morning. The ship is now docked at an anchorage area off of Fort Lauderdale beach. ”It was at high tide and under the ship’s own power [that] they were able to free themselves,” said U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman Gretchen Chapman. The Norwegian freight Spar Orion was carrying 44,000 metric tons of cement when it struck a reef about 1.2 miles north of Port Everglades, Coast Guard officials said.
