The U.S. Navy has awarded Mobile-based Austal Hull 130 Chartering LLC a $13.4 million contract for a 228-day lease of a high speed vessel to transport soldiers and equipment among countries in the West Pacific, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Parent company, Australia-based Austal Ltd., built the 331-foot long MV Westpac Express and beat seven competitors to win renewal of a contract first awarded in 2001, according to Bill Pfister, executive vice president of Austal Hull.
