GROTON — The region should know next month whether congressional efforts were successful in getting the necessary funding to increase submarine production from one to two a year. The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense is expected to send its appropriations bill to the floor the first two weeks of June, according to U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd District. The state’s congressional delegation is seeking additional funding this year to try to stem scheduled layoffs at Electric Boat. The Groton shipyard has said it will lay off as many as 2,400 workers during the next two years because there is not enough new work to keep them busy.
