Five hundred UK holidaymakers have been sent home after their cruise ship was detained by the coastguard because of a severe virus “rife” among the 250 crew. So many had the virus, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, the ship would have been unable to cope with any emergency, the coastguard added. When the Van Gogh docked at Harwich, 14 passengers from its previous cruise were also suffering from the virus. Two had to be carried to an ambulance and taken to Colchester Hospital.
