A cruise ship passenger jumped into the pitch-black ocean off the British Virgin Islands, prompting a futile 12-hour search that bogged down thousands of vacationers yesterday, officials said. The unidentified man went overboard from the Carnival Legend vessel just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, the cruise line said. The liner was about 650 miles offshore after leaving Tortola on its way back to New York.
