A Taiwan-based shipping line has started service to the Port of Portland, providing another boost to the port that struggled after two of its three major container carriers pulled out in 2004. Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. began its Portland service Thursday, one month after carrier ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. made its first call to the port. The new service means lower transportation costs for regional businesses, which will now be able to send their goods to Asia from Portland instead of first shipping them to other West Coast ports.
