NORFOLK – There’s plenty of activity across the water, where more than 3,000 employees at the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard are helping to build six Virginia-class submarines. Even as production ramps up in the shipyard, however, submarine activity will decline at the naval base. In the early 1990s, 24 submarines were homeported here. Now home to 11 submarines, Norfolk Naval Station will host just seven subs by 2008 .
