Thousands of tonnes of chemicals are to be slowly released into the sea from the wreck of a freighter that sank near the Channel Islands earlier this year. The Ece sank with more than 10,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid on board after a collision with another vessel 30 miles (50km) north west of Guernsey. The French Navy will supervise the operation this summer, which it is hoped will be completed in September. The operation will also recover 40 tonnes of fuel in the ship’s tanks.
