A record 46 Maxis will take to the starting line today, Monday 4 September, for the first day’s racing in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2006. The cream of the crop assembled in Sardinia’s Porto Cervo this morning with an easterly breeze of four to six knots, this event marks the biggest-ever gathering of Maxi yachts, representing 15 nations. There are five divisions in the racing, including: Racing, Cruising, Mini Maxi, Spirit of Tradition and Wally. Competitors include well-known Reichel-Pugh designs, winner of the Sydney-Hobart Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats XI (AUS), and winner of the 2006 Giraglia Rolex Cup, Neville Crichton’s Alfa Romeo (NZL).
