The Indian Navy is looking to indigenise its future requirements. Having around 135 commissioned ships in its inventory, the Navy is planning to build around 35 more ships indigenously. The Indian Navy is keen to retain its Blue Water – ocean going – character. The ratio of Blue Water to Brown Water ships being 40 to 60 is expected to be turned around to 60 to 40. According to sources, the ships being ordered are scheduled to be commissioned and functional by 2012.
