Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands Dr Orlando Smith says the recent launch of the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry (VISR) is a fulfilment of the final conditions for the Territory to operate as a Category One Shipping Registry and a pledge by Government.

The newest Government department will provide an efficient ship registration and survey service for local boat owners and those from abroad who qualify to register ships in the BVI and help bring those boaters in line with the merchant shipping legislation.

The Chief Minister noted that establishment and launching of the VISR was long overdue and said the registry will make Government more efficient and responsive in addressing the needs of seafarers.
