Bangladesh has discovered a new gas field near the capital Dhaka with approximate reserves of up to 500 billion cubic feet (Bcf), a key energy official said on Wednesday.

Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) found the gas field located in Block 9 at Gazipur, about 40 km (25 miles) north of the city, after months of survey and exploration, said Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Chairman of the state oil and gas agency Petrobangla.
