Repair crews on Monday fired up generators and switched on the lights aboard a Japanese whaling ship for the first time since a deadly fire rendered it powerless and adrift near the Antarctic coast four days earlier.

As work continued to get the ship out of trouble under its own steam, New Zealand’s leader warned that Japan’s controversial whaling program would face fresh international condemnation if the vessel caused an environmental disaster on the frozen continent.
