Broads dredging effort brought forward Project Updates – June 3, 2008
BBC News Online reports that dredging of a Suffolk broad has been brought forward by three years.
Said the BBC: “The Broads Authority is carrying out the work early after the Environment Agency said it could use the 5,500 cubic metres of mud from Oulton Broad. ”
Permission was originally given to infill dykes with the mud in the Jenson’s Island area but this scheme has been replaced. The dredgings will now be deposited at Black Mill on the River Waveney under a flood alleviation programme.
Suffolk Wildlife Trust had hoped to restore part of the degraded marsh at Jenson’s Island which will not now be possible.
Steve Aylward, from the trust, said: “We are disappointed the scheme is not going ahead and we are losing this opportunity to restore a good part of Jenson’s Island. But we understand the problems faced by the Broads Authority in finding possible silt disposal sites and the trust will continue to work with the authority to resolve the situation.”
The BBC said work is due to be completed by the peak boating season in mid-July.
