Potential entrants to the oil and gas sector will be getting a chance to find out exactly how the industry operates with some hands-on displays in Aberdeen later this month provided through collaboration between UK oil companies and training organisations.
Up to 450 senior school pupils are being invited to the Energise Your Future fair at Aberdeen exhibition and conference centre where they will get their chance to “fly” a Remotely Operated Vehicle in a giant tank, test their aptitude for engineering with technical challenges, and put their agility to the test on a giant climbing wall.
School pupils will be encouraged to come and discover the range of opportunities open to them within the oil and gas industry through workshops and interactive displays during the industry show on 26 June, which is being organised by the Oil and Gas Academy – backed by Opito, the offshore industry training board and Oil and Gas UK, as well as Marathon Oil UK, Shell, plus the Energy Institute, and agencies providing careers advice.
“This event will, for the first time, provide stimulating and fun practical experiences and information on the huge scope of employment opportunities to a new generation,” promised David Doig chief executive of Opito, pictured testing his skills in the ROV tank.
He went on: “A key part of the Oil and Gas Academy’s remit is to work with education and academia, as well as our alliance partners, to proactively support the industry’s learning needs. There are a wide range of different career and lifestyle opportunities within the oil and gas industry from catering and administration to engineering, drilling, accounting and geo-science.”
The event is open to school pupils between 9.30am and 2.30pm, and to the public later in the day.
