The Philly News reports that Governor Corzine recently threatened to delay the Delaware River ship channel deepening project, saying the deal signed last week “violated his 2007 peace treaty with Governor Rendell.”
Said the report: “Last week, port officials said the US$379 million dredging project could begin within 10 months. Corzine said his 2007 agreement with Rendell, which ended New Jersey’s long and bitter efforts to halt the project, required that his Department of Environmental Protection got to review the dredged-material disposal plan and an updated environmental-impact statement.”
Corzine said it also appeared that the Army Corps of Engineers planned to dump some dredged material in New Jersey, in violation of his agreement with Rendell.
“This position is totally unacceptable,” Corzine wrote in a strong letter to John Paul Woodley Jr, the assistant secretary of the Army for Civil Works, who signed the agreement with Pennsylvania.
New Jersey will “take whatever measures are necessary” to enforce the 2007 agreement, the letter said.
