A revolutionary exploration drilling device sponsored by StatoilHydro and ExxonMobil and Shell has passed a first drilling test at a site in Denmark.

Badger Explorer underwent the first full scale prototype test onshore in Denmark in what was described as “relevant geology” which yielded valuable results and experience, according to company chief executive Kjell Erik-Drevdal.

And he indicated the tests will go a long way towards taking the product into commercial development

During the work in Denmark, the Demo50 test examined the machine’s drilling and pump modules capabilities, and its cutting and fluids transport systems. Improved techniques for separating drill cuttings and fluid were evaluated, while the suitability of the local geology for further testing was also assessed. All of these tests were satisfactorily accomplished, the company has declared.

“The achievements verify the design and the capabilities of the technology at this stage and represent yet another step towards a commercial launch of Badger Explorer,” Drevdal declared.

Assembly of a new semi-autonomous unit is due to take place which will be put through a self-burying drilling testing at the same location in the third quarter this year, the company has indicated.

A commercial launch of the product is slated for the first half of 2010.
