Victoria’s Independent Monitor will meet with the Port of Melbourne Corporation today to discuss the first breach of environmental standards during the channel deepening project.

The Port has admitted it did not sufficiently clear dredging material from 9,000 square metres of the most sensitive area of Port Philip Bay.

Under the State Government’s Environmental Management Plan, all rock sediment must be removed from 90 per cent of the dredged area within 18 hours.

Government appointed monitor, Mick Bourke, says he will demand an explanation as to why it took two days for the breach to be reported.
