Lloyd’s Register’s Nordic Committee met today in London to discuss current issues and share information. Key topics discussed were the Maritime Labour Convention, control of greenhouse gas emissions from ships and implementation standards to drive improved environmental performance.
Roland Ives, Lloyd’s Register’s Manager, Human Element & ILO issues told the assembled delegates that the new International Labour Organisation (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 when it comes into force will address the causes of fatigue, occupational health and safety, recruitment and the working and living conditions for seafarers, with the potential for improving crew retention and motivation and the safety and status of shipping.
Ives said: “The convention is very broad in its scope and complexity and poses significant challenges to the industry. The awareness and a common resolution to such challenges are paramount to the success of this maritime labour convention”. He added “the opportunity to discuss such issues today at the Nordic Committee proved invaluable to attaining a common understanding”.
Other presentations by Lloyd’s Register Group experts addressed the topics of greenhouse gas emissions and environmental performance issues.
The Nordic Committee’s rolling executive saw Finland’s Thomas Franck, taking over as Deputy Chairman and Jan-Eric Nilsson of Sweden elected Chairman. They take over from Norway’s Lars Traaseth, who steps down as Deputy Chairman and Claus Thornberg of Denmark the outgoing Chairman who both ended their three year stint on the executive today.
