Saab TransponderTech has been awarded a contract to supply a coastal Automatic Identification System (AIS) network for the east coast of the Malaysian peninsula and an integration of all AIS systems in the country.
The contract was awarded to Saab by the Marine Department in Malaysia, and the work is being completed in collaboration with Saab’s Malaysian partner, Maicons Technology.
Saab had earlier been contracted to supply the AIS coastal network for the west coast of the Malaysian peninsula (Straits of Malacca) and the Sarawak installations. The contract has recently been completed and provides a fully integrated AIS-based Monitoring and Control System with complete coverage of the entire Malaysian coastline, stretching over 1,200 Nautical miles from east to west.
The Malaysian AIS system is based on Saab’s CoastWatch AIS Monitoring and Control System, which combines all of the surveillance stations into a highly integrated network. National CoastWatch AIS systems from Saab are in use in a dozen countries around the world.
“With these extensions and upgrades of the system, the maritime authorities of Malaysia will have a state-of-the-art system for monitoring and managing the high density of vessel traffic transiting the country’s coastal waterways, including the Straits of Malacca,” said Gunnar Mangs, vice president, sales and marketing, Saab TransponderTech. “The system will give the Malaysian government full centralized access to data from the AIS base stations around the coastline, making an important contribution to national security and marine safety.”
