The Vietnamese Foreign Ministry has asked China to release twelve Vietnamese fishermen and two boats currently being held in Chinese custody.
Chinese fishery patrol vessels detained three Vietnamese fishing boats and 37 sailors on June 16 on the grounds of illegal fishing while they were catching fish in Vietnam’s Hoang Sa Islands. The captains of the vessels were issued with fines totalling US$31,000.
