The Western Dredging Association (WEDA), the ‘Recognized Center of Dredging Excellence’ hosted with Texas A & M University (TAMU), their Annual Western Hemisphere Dredging Conference. It was held in San Juan Puerto Rico June 6-9, 2010. The Goals and Objectives of Western Hemisphere Conferences are to promote the exchange of information related to Dredging, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Construction, and the Enhancement of the Marine Environment. At this and other WEDA/TAMU conferences WEDA/TAMU and its Sponsors select individuals who have made significant contributions to furthering our Goals and Objectives. Cash prizes ranging from $200.00 to $500.00 are presented to Author(s) of Technical Papers selected by the Conference Technical Papers Committee deemed to be the Conference Best. The awards presented were:
The Dredging Contractors of America Best Paper Award was presented to Professor Donald F. Hayes, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Louisiana for his paper “Propwash Impacts on Water Quality Around Dredging and other Marine Construction Activities”. Professor Hayes and his Co-Authors Rohit Chintamaneni, Pra Ithyusha Bommareddy, and Bhaskar Cherukuri were presented with $500.00 and a framed Certificate of Achievement.
Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company presented its 2nd Place Best Paper Award to Ms. Tahinh Lackey, Research Engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg, Mississippi and Co-Authors Sung-Chan Kim, Douglas Clarke and Jarrell Smith for their paper “Transport and Fate of Winter Flounder Eggs Near Dredging Operations” who were presented with Certificates of Achievement and a $400.00 Cash Prize.
The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company Third Place Best Paper Award was presented to Ms. Kathryn K. Curtis, Environmental Scientist, Port of Los Angeles, California and Co-Authors Brent Mardian and Ying Poon for their paper titled “Cabrillo Way Marina Dredging, Port of Los Angeles, California, USA: Part 1 – Sediment Plume Monitoring.” Ms. Curtis and her Co-Authors were presented with Certificates of Achievement and a $200.00 Cash Prize.
Taylor Engineering of Jacksonville, Florida presented WEDA’s first Annual Young Author Award to Mr. Nicholas J. Picou, Mechanical Engineer, Dredging Supply Company, Reserve Louisiana for his Paper Titled “An Evolution in the Design of the deepest Mining Dredge in the Western Hemisphere.”
