“With the rapid growth plans that India had set for itself in the coming years the demand in power will increase manifold. With our technology, we are helping to ensure that this expansion is environmentally compatible,” says Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of the Siemens Energy Sector. “For Torrent, Siemens has already built the power plants Paguthan with a capacity of 655 MW and SUGEN rated at 1,150 MW.”

“The UNOSUGEN and DGEN power projects are Torrent contribution in meeting the growing demand for electricity in the country and particularly Gujarat,” said Sudhir Mehta, Chairman Torrent Group. “We have shared a long standing association with Siemens spanning more than a decade and we are once again glad to have them as our partners in the implementation of these projects.” Torrent Power, the power utility of the Torrent Group, is one of the largest private players in the country having integrated operations in the power sector. It generates 1647.5 MW power to nearly 3 million customers.

Highly efficient combined-cycle power plants like the ones Siemens has sold to Torrent are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled approximately EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
