Castrol Marine employee Ufuk Seçgin has helped to tackle the aftermath of Pakistan’s deadliest floods in decades.
As part of the SIHHN (Stichting Internationale Humanitaire Hulporganisatie Nederland) Pakistan Emergency Response Team, Ufuk took part in the successful distribution of more than 1,000 family aid packages in the Nowshera district in the Northern province of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
Ufuk, Marine Services Marketing Manager for Castrol Marine, was part of a convoy that set off from the Pakistan capital Islamabad, bringing aid to Aza Khel village and Kheshgi, a remote town with a population of approximately 100,000 people. Ufuk was also part of SIHHN’s first response team after the 2004 tsunami in Aceh/Indonesia.
More than 2,000 people have lost their lives in the disaster, which presents an overwhelming situation for government officials and aid workers. Around 1 million homes have been damaged and as many as 20 million people have been affected by the devastation. By comparison, the number of people affected by the floods in Pakistan is more than the combined total of those hit by the 2004 Tsunami, 2005 Pakistan Earthquake and 2010 Haiti Earthquake.
The BP Foundation, the charitable arm of Castrol parent company BP, has donated $1million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to aid the victims of this disaster.
Ben Cannon, Executive Director of the BP Foundation said: “These funds – along with the support provided by BP’s Employee Matching Program – will provide emergency relief in the form of safe water, medical assistance, food, tents and shelter material.”
