Norway: Statoil Stops Production from Kristin and Tyrihans Fields

In connection with a routine inspection of the Kristin platform(photo) in the Norwegian Sea at the end of last week, a high temperature was discovered on the outside of an exhaust duct on one of the gas turbines.

The temperature was higher than considered acceptable and a decision was taken to stop production during Sunday 12 December.

Work is under way to rectify matters. It is expected that production can be resumed by the end of December.

The Kristin platform lies in the south-western area of the Halten Bank and produces gas and oil/condensate from the Kristin and Tyrihans fields.

The shut-down will entail a deferment in production of daily volumes corresponding to a total of 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) from the two fields.

Kristin Gas Field

The Kristin gas and condensate field came on stream on 3 November 2005.

Kristin is located in the south-western part of the Halten Bank in the Norwegian Sea.

The field has been developed with 12 production wells in four subsea templates, tied back to a semi-submersible production platform.

Kristin is currently producing 10 million cubic metres of gas per day. Daily production capacity from the field is 125,000 barrels of condensate and just over 18 million cubic metres of rich gas.

The Kristin reservoir is located almost 5,000 metres below ground.

Pressure and temperature in the reservoir – at 900 bar and 170°C respectively – are higher than on any other field so far developed on the Norwegian continental shelf.
