Tideland Signal has supplied a package of navigational warning systems to replace obsolete lights on the bridge-linked Ekofisk Kilo and Bravo platforms in the North Sea. The new system, incorporating the latest technology, comprises two main Syncrolan light stations located at opposite ends of the complex and three subsidiary lights marking the other prominent corners.

The combined main and secondary light stations consist of an ML-300Ex SL-400 lantern with a range of 15 NM backed by a secondary ML-300 of 10 NM range. They are mounted on a stainless steel pedestal with an Exd enclosure and an Exe junction box ready for field connection. The subsidiary lights are also pedestal-mounted Tideland ML-300 units complete with Exd enclosure and an Exe junction box.

A separate AC cabinet houses two transformers for the main lights, a battery charger, AC breakers for the main lights, current monitors and a lantern-in-use indicator. The DC distribution board is housed in a stainless steel Exd enclosure with through-door breakers and current monitors. The battery banks and battery breaker are contained in two further enclosures. All equipment is ATEX certified for use in Zone 1 (Cat 2) hazardous areas. In addition to a wide range of warning systems throughout the North Sea, Tideland has previously supplied SeaBeacon 2 dual-band racons to Phillips Petroleum Company Norway to mark the two booster platforms on the 275 mile gas pipeline from the Ekofisk complex to the Emden Terminal in Germany.

Ekofisk is located in the southern part of the North Sea at a depth of 70-75 metres. Production began in 1971, since when the field has beenfurther developed with many facilities, including risers for associated fields and export pipelines. Ekofisk B is connected by bridge to Ekofisk K, which is a facility for water injection. Production from Ekofisk continues to be maintained at a high level, mainly due to the increased number of water injection wells and production from new facilities. There are plans for more new facilities and new drilling targets for extended water injection in the southern parts of the field. In addition to efforts to optimize short and long-term production, work on disposal of disused facilities is in progress. Approved to ISO 9001:2008, Tideland Signal Limited is a British-based member of the Tideland group of companies, which specialises in aids to marine navigation. The Tideland group is independently owned and has its headquarters in Houston, Texas.
