Eni Norge AS, operator of production licence 489, is in the process of completing the drilling of wildcat well 7120/12-5 in the Barents Sea.
The well has been drilled about 115 kilometres northwest of Hammerfest and about 50 kilometres west of the Goliat field.
The purpose of the well was to prove petroleum in Jurassic and Triassic reservoir rocks (the Stø, Snadd and Kobbe formations).
Reservoir rocks with medium reservoir quality were encountered both in the Stø and Snadd formations, but the Kobbe formation was poorer than expected. The well was classified as dry. Comprehensive data acquisition and sampling have been carried out.
The well is the first exploration well in production licence 489. The production licence was awarded in APA 2007 on 29 February 2008.
The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 3605 metres below sea level, and was terminated 60 metres into the Kobbe formation. Water depth at the site is 187 metres. The well will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.
Well 7120/12-5 S was drilled by the Polar Pioneer drilling facility , which will now proceed to production licence 488 in the Barents Sea to drill wildcat well 7119/12-4, where Statoil Petroleum AS is the operator.
