APM Terminals Liberia has officially started operations on schedule with the first port call of the CHARLOTTA. APM Terminals has taken over the 25-year concession agreement to operate the Port of Monrovia in Liberia, based on the government ratification in October 2010. The concession agreement also includes rehabilitating the quay wall, developing the container and general cargo activities and Marine Services for the port. The company will invest USD 120 million during the contract term and have 100% ownership of the terminal.
Monrovia is the Capital and largest city in Liberia, a nation of 3.8 million people on the West African coast. The Freeport of Monrovia is the main gateway for goods entering and exiting Liberia and is fundamental to the Liberian economy. The port is a multi-purpose port – handling containers, RoRo and other commodities such a frozen fish, bagged cement and rice. Major customers of the Freeport of Monrovia include organizations like the United Nations Military and UN World Food Programme.
The APM Terminals Global Terminal Network is well-established in West Africa with facilities in Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Cotonou, Benin; Tema, Ghana; Apapa (Lagos), and Onne (Port Harcourt), Nigeria; Douala, Cameroon; Monrovia, Liberia; Pointe-Noire (under development), Republic of the Congo; and Luanda, Angola.
