The Indian Navy captured 28 pirates and freed 24 hostages on February 6, about 100 nautical miles off Kavaratti. The Naval Command deployed off Kavaratti received information regarding an attack against the Greek-registered crude oil tanker Chios, 301.824 DWT, on February 5 and where asked to locate the pirates who had carried out the unsuccessful attack. An Indian Navy aircraft located the skiffs and their mother vessel in the evening, the next morning the Navy together with the Indian Coastguard launched a counterattack.
