Engineering and construction company, Clough Limited has demonstrated its commitment to helping create an engineering centre of excellence in Western Australia, by contributing $250,000 to Curtin University’s new Engineering Pavilion which was officially opened by Prime Minister Julia Gillard today.

Clough is also the major sponsor for the University of Western Australia’s First Year Engineering Centre, which will be opened later this year.

The Curtin Engineering Pavilion forms stage one of the $32.5 million Curtin Engineering Pavilion Complex, an initiative that will create a world-class centre for undergraduate education and research in engineering, featuring technologically advanced learning facilities.

“As a Western Australian company Clough is proud to be associated with Curtin University and the development of this outstanding facility. The Engineering Pavilion will help equip engineering students with the skills to work on major resource projects in Australia and around the world. In the long term this should help improve local industry participation, by making Western Australia a centre of excellence for engineering” said Clough CEO John Smith.

The project was made possible by the Australian Government, which contributed $20.5 million in the first-round funding from the Education Investment Fund in the Federal Budget in 2009, and corporate sponsors like Clough.

The Curtin Engineering Pavilion has been submitted for a 5 Star Green Star Rating, based on its innovative environmental design and technologies, which have also been developed as hands-on learning tools for Curtin’s engineering students.

Stage two of the Curtin Engineering Pavilion Complex, due for completion in 2012, will consist of an additional four-level Learning Centre adjacent and linked to the Pavilion. It will provide world-class research and teaching accommodation, and provide a gateway for the Faculty of Engineering.
