The opening of the Baltic 1 offshore wind farm on represents a milestone, according to the CEO of the energy utility Baden-Wuerttemberg (EnBW), Hans-Peter Villis. “As the first commercial wind farm in Germany, this project has a special meaning for the offshore wind sector, “ said Villis. Baltic 1 will produce power for about 50 000 households with 21 wind turbines off Darß.
EnBW is planning a second wind farm off Rügen with 80 wind turbines. “Wind energy will still require assistance from support systems for a certain transitional period, “ said Villis .
About Baltic 1
Baltic 1 Offshore Wind Farm is the first commercial offshore wind farm of Germany in the Baltic Sea. Baltic 1 is located about 16 kilometers north of the Darss-Zingst Peninsula and it covers about seven square kilometers. Work started in July 2010.
Cable supplier NKT Holding was 3 months late with the delivers, therefore the €195m cable orders for Baltic 2 were granted to General Cable instead.
