The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency Hydrographer, Rear Admiral Chris Andreasen, has been presented with the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office’s (UKHO) Alexander Dalrymple Award at a ceremony conducted by the Deputy Head of Mission, Philip Barton, at the British Embassy in Washington DC.
Rear Admiral Andreasen was honoured for his outstanding contribution to Hydrography. The award was announced at the UKHO’s celebration of World Hydrography Day held in London on 22 June, and is particularly appropriate as the theme for this year’s World Hydrography Day is the human contribution to surveying and charting the maritime environment.
Philip explained, “ Despite its technical name, the relevance of hydrography is quite simple – 90% of the world’s international trade by volume goes by sea and that trade relies on the hydrographic process in order to
navigate the often complex trading routes. ” In making the award, he stated, “ It is no exaggeration to say that the overall impact of Admiral Andreasen over the last half century has been vital to
hydrography and the people who serve this science, as well as the wider international community with an interest in the maritime environment .”
The UK National Hydrographer, Rear Admiral Nick Lambert, read the citation and emphasised that Rear Admiral Andreasen, “Has supported and challenged
our own thoughts with sound reason and a firm yet fair diplomatic touch.”
The award is named in honour of Alexander Dalrymple FRS, who set up what is now the UKHO in 1795 – Dalrymple is renowned today as a leading figure in the world of hydrography.
The Alexander Dalrymple Award is a symbol of recognition for outstanding dedication and contribution to world hydrography and, as such, is an extremely prestigious award in this sector.
