RWE npower renewables’ first issue of a newsletter designed to keep people in North Wales informed about the development of offshore wind power has been published.
“Wind Power News: North Wales Offshore Wind Farm Update” is available from libraries, leisure centres, tourist information centres, council offices and community centres along the north Wales coast.
It contains detailed information about the plans for Gwynt y Môr, one of the largest offshore wind farm developments currently in construction in Europe, as well as operational sites Rhyl Flats and North Hoyle.
The project, which is located 18kms off the North Wales coast, consists of 160 turbines producing a total of 576 MW of energy from the wind, two offshore substations, a large new onshore substation and 11kms of underground cabling.
It is a shared investment between partners RWE Innogy, Stadtwerke München GmbH and Siemens.
Once fully operational, Gwynt y Môr is expected to produce energy equivalent to the average annual needs of around 400,000 homes.
The project director for Gwynt y Môr, Toby Edmonds, said: “ Our first newsletter provides local people, businesses and community leaders with all the information they will need to keep up to date with the development plans for Gwynt y Môr. There’s also information about our two operating wind farms, North Hoyle and Rhyl Flats.”
“We’ve designed the four page booklet to be easy to understand, free from technical jargon, while clearly outlining the benefits of this investment to the region, the jobs being created and the investment this wind farm is bringing.
“There’s also a timetable for the construction work included so people know when the phases of work are due to start and when the project will be fully operational.”
Onshore work for Gwynt y Môr has already begun near St Asaph, with groundwork preparations for a substation to link the wind farm to the National Grid distribution network. The substation will be connected to the wind farm via 11 kilometres of underground cable, currently being laid between Pensarn and St Asaph Business Park.
Wind Power News will be published at intervals throughout the construction of Gwynt y Môr. The next issue will be available before offshore works begin in Liverpool Bay in November, 2011.
