Lithuania: Klaipėda Port Handles 18,4 Million Tons of Sea Born Cargo in First Half of 2011

Throughout six month of this year Klaipėda Port handled 18,4 million tons of sea born cargo, the overall cargo handling increase reached even 22,6 % if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year.

According to cargo handling turnover in Easter Coast Baltic Ports in the period of January – June of 2011 Klaipeda Port has still remained ahead the neighbouring Ports of Riga and Ventspils but slightly left behind the Joint Port of Tallinn. The common cargo handling results of Klaipeda Port and Būtingė Terminal made 22,6 million tons in January – June of 2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn by 3,48 million tons.

The highest increase in cargo turnover during six month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+1 342,5 thousand tons), containerized cargo (+528,7 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+475,9 thousand tons), oil products (+402,5 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo(+376,6 thousand tons) and bulk iron ore (+258,9 thousand tons) and

In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo were the handlingturnover made 7 040,3 thousand tons (38,2 percent of overall port handling turnover) increased mostly(by 25,9 percent). Handling turnover of general cargo increased by23,3 percent, in total 5 713,5 thousand tons (31,0 percent) were handled. Liquefied cargo handlingvolumes increased by 18,2 percent, the handling volumes of this cargo group were 5 658,4thousand tons (30,8 percent).

3376 vessels, i.e. more by 9,5 percent or by 292 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous yearcalled Klaipėda Port in January–June of this yearThe number of passengerscalling the Portthroughout the analysed periodwas 147,7 thousand, i.e. more by 4,4percent comparing with the corresponding period of 2010. The number of cruise passengers in January – June of 2011 was 9,8 thousand, i.e. less by –39,4 percent or by -6,4 thousand passengers.

Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 210 604 TEU, i.e. more by 49,3 percent comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2010 (the increase made69 527 TEU) were handled in Klaipėda Port in January – June of 2011.
