Cathelco have supplied a hull corrosion protection system for the Armada TGT 1, an FPSO which has been converted by the Keppel Shipyard in Singapore for Bumi Armada Berhad. The Armada TGT 1 will be deployed in the Te Giac Trang oilfield off Vietnam by the Hoang Long Joint Operating Company where it will produce up to 55,000 barrels of oil per day and store 620,000 barrels of oil.

The Cathelco impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system will protect the hull of the FPSO against corrosion over its 20 year design life. The contract has been won through Cathelco S.E.A, Cathelco’s wholly owned subsidiary in Singapore which is strategically located to provide equipment and technical support throughout the region.

As the Armada TGT 1 is 332 metres in length, Cathelco has provided an 800 amp fore and aft ICCP system. Both of the systems consist of 400amp thyristor control panels wired to pairs of anodes and reference electrodes mounted on the surface of the hull.

In operation, the reference electrodes measure the electrical ‘potential’ at the hull seawater interface and send a reading to the control panel which raises or lowers the output to the anodes so that the optimum level of corrosion protection is achieved at all times.

The Armada TGT 1 has been installed with linear loop anodes which are diver changeable. This is allows them to be changed at sea, an important factor for FPSOs which operate for prolonged periods without drydocking.

“ Cathelco have a considerable amount of experience in the design of ICCP systems for FPSOs. This includes an understanding of the coating breakdown factors and the demands made by mooring chains on vessels of this type which require reliable and long lasting hull protection ”, said Aneel Mumtaz, a corrosion engineer at Cathelco’s head office .

Cathelco have also supplied an ICCP system for the Amore, an FSO which is being converted by Keppel for Bumi Armada Berhad.

In May, the company announced that they had supplied an ICCP system for the Cidade de Paraty, an FPSO which has been converted by Keppel for SBM Offshore.

Earlier in year, an ICCP system was installed on the P62 FPSO at the Jurong Shipyard in Singapore. This was quickly followed by the installation of a system on the P63 at the COSCO (Dalian) shipyard.
