Costain has been awarded a contract to provide cryogenic expertise on a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study for FLEX LNG’s fixed floating LNG production project for operations in Papua New Guinea.

The FEED contract was awarded to the KANFA Aragon/WorleyParsons joint venture FirstLNG by Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd on 27 May 2011.

Costain has been working in partnership with KANFA Aragon for a number of years, delivering concept, pre-FEED and FEED studies for LNG floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) projects.

The team recently launched a joint marketing campaign, offering all aspects of design and supply of LNG FPSO topsides, including technology licensing, FEED, detailed design and procurement. The campaign was launched at the Gastech exhibition in Amsterdam in March of this year.

The field specific FEED is scheduled to take six months, progressing to a Final Investment Decision. The study will develop the generic FEED work previously carried out by KANFA Aragon and Costain for the development of an LNG processing and liquefaction topside with a capacity of up to 2.0 mtpa of LNG.

Costain will continue to provide cryogenic expertise based on the Company’s extensive experience in the design, supply and operation of cryogenic gas separation and liquefaction plants, including N 2 cycle technology for LNG, air separation and synthesis gas processing.

Frank Millar, Costain Hydrocarbons & Chemicals Sector Director , said: “ First of a kind projects like this bring a range of complex engineering challenges, which require the formation of specialist teams to address them. We are pleased to bring our cryogenic expertise to the team designing the world’s first floating LNG project .”

“ The ability to produce LNG at the point of extraction will mean many remote offshore gas fields will become economically viable for the first time ,” added Charles Sweeney, Managing Director of Costain’s Energy & Process division . “ With the global demand for LNG ever-increasing, this technology is set to revolutionise the energy industry .”
