Qatargas recently participated in the Energy HSE Forum championing “Societal License to Operate: Environment & Stakeholder Management” at the 7th HSE Forum in Energy, organised by Fleming Gulf, held in Doha.
Held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy & Industry and Chairman of Qatargas Board of Directors, the 7th Annual Forum in Energy was attended by some 250 leading regional and international industrial stakeholders from the oil and gas sectors.
Mr.Toufik Benmosbah, Chief Safety, Environment and Quality Officer – Qatargas, participated as an expert panel member at the Forum providing insight on solutions essential to ensuring effective health and safety management and sustainable environmental practices in the Energy sector.
Contributing towards this, Qatargas’ paper was jointly presented by Mr.James Baldwin, Environmental Affairs Manager and Ms. Dana Haidan, Corporate Citizenship Officer 1 of Qatargas , and outlined how stake-holder engagement is fundamental to a social and environmental risk strategy for any company and that the key to managing social and environmental risk is effective management of stakeholder relationships .
Mr. Baldwin added: “ Interdependency on our global customer base and our market as well as the complexity of this relationship has increased over the recent years leading to greater efficiency and effectiveness of operation; however at the same time, to greater vulnerability and risk .”
During the Forum Qatargas also conveyed that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) forms an inextricable part of Qatargas’ reputation operating philosophy and brand identity. It is an integral element of social and environmental risk management and as such CSR is linked strategically to core business functions and is a critical element of risk management.
For Qatargas the CSR programme provides a framework and principles for stakeholder engagement, supplies intelligence on emerging and current supporting corporate risk agenda, and serves as a counter measure for reputational risk.
CSR is related to corporate risk management through two means: by providing intelligence about what those risks are and by offering an effective means to respond to them.
The key to both is more effectively managing stakeholder relationships.
