Cairn India has identified natural gas in its 2nd exploration well in Mannar basin, off the coast of Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan government stated that additional exploration will be required to see if the discovery is going to be commercially recoverable, Reuters reported.
The president’s office explained that the Barracuda 1/G1 well which drilled to a depth of 4,700 metres (15,400 feet) had three petroleum-bearing formations with gas and an indication of liquid hydrocarbons.
First well in 30 years
Last month, Cairn India announced a gas discovery in its first well offshore Sri Lanka (The CLPL-Dorado-91H/1z) , but also said that it was too early to proclaim the discovery as commerically viable.
The CLPL-Dorado-91H/1z well was the first well to have been drilled in Sri Lanka in 30 years and the first well to discover hydrocarbons in the country. It encountered a gross 25m hydrocarbon column in a sandstone between the depths of 3043.8-3068.7m
