SBSS Successfully Completes Bundled Lay of 3 Cables in South Korea

In January 2012, S. B. Submarine Systems was contracted by LS Cable & Systems (LSCS) to install 15km of bundled cables and 22km of fibre optic cables from Jindo, South of Korea. The system owner is KEPCO (Korean Electric Corporation) and the 2 segments are to be laid as part of the Jeju to Jindo cable system network.

SBSS DP2 cable ship Bold Maverick cable ship was utilized to do this work and specialized engineering and systems integration was required to prepare the vessel to perform the bundle lay of cables with 3 different sizes. SBSS engineering team also fitted 3 cable engines, a 3 to 1 converging trackway system and an automated bundling system onboard the vessel to meet the customer’s requirements for this project. An experienced deck team was also in place to efficiently install UP Pipe cable protection for the bundled cables for added cable protection.

The work in South Korea was met with challenging weather conditions down to -18 degrees Celsius with 6knots of currents and a very tight weather window. The powerful dynamic positioning system onboard the Bold Maverick and the experienced crew met up with the challenge of maintain an accurate course of the cable route.

The overall result is a challenging marine project being implemented and executed in record time while meeting the demanding expectations of the customer (LSCS) and system owner (KEPCO) .

Mr. K.Y. Lee ,Project Head of LSCS congratulated SBSS after completion by commenting: “ SBSS operation team have shown very high competency throughout this project and have managed to successfully install the cables on schedule with zero incident under very tight timelines and challenging weather conditions.”
