Qatar Petroleum is considering buying into an Australian export boom that poses the only serious challenge to its place as the world’s top LNG producer, Reuters reported, citing Abdulrahman Al-Shaibi, director of finance at QP.
“ I think we are exploring all geographical places that would really achieve our business objectives and Australia definitely is an important proposition where maybe we will be able to find good investment opportunities ,” he told Reuters on the sidelines of a conference in Dubai.
“ Qatar Petroleum International (QPI) will be embarking on different types of projects. They have in the pipeline greenfield projects very similar to the projects we have done over the last 20 years. So most probably those projects will be attracting project financing. But of course we will be looking into multi-source financing to ensure that we raise sufficient funding ,” he said.
Qatar has an LNG production capacity of 77 million tonnes per annum – by far the largest in the world.
In 2010, the State of Qatar, through Nakilat and its LNG joint ventures took delivery of the last of 54 LNG tankers and four LPG ships built by South Korea shipyards valued at over US$13.5 billion.
