After the National Grid revealed six possible options for transporting electricity from a proposed nuclear power station and new wind turbines, Cumbria County councillors raised their voice against huge pylons which could stretch across the Cumbria’s countryside, the News & Star reports.
It is likely the new power lines would go into the Lake District National Park. Two options would bring two sets of pylon lines to Harker, north of Carlisle. These would be connected to a succession of pylons stretching eastwards across north Cumbria.
Cumbria County Council’s environment portfolio holder, Tim Knowles, said that local councils and people of Cumbria had no power to stop the development. He added that he made the opinion concerning pylons and wind turbines in the same area very clear to the government.
If the Government grants consent, the North West Coast Connection project development would begin in 2016. It is part of a GBP 16 billion national investment programme.
