Orkney Islands Council has announced tender for tidal energy consultancy services worth approximately between £275,000 and £300,000.

The services included in the tender are the investigation and detailed solutions for the wave overtopping problem generated from the East at No 2 Churchill barrier, Holm Sound, Orkney, as well as the review of data and study of tidal flow at Barrier No 2 to investigate the viability of tidal energy capture (from turbines) particularly given the environmental and physical conditions encountered at this location.

It is essential that any energy capture solution that may be developed must also resolve the wave overtopping problem.

The proposed solutions to be investigated should include offshore breakwater, re face/re-build of the existing barrier and replacement of the existing barrier with bridge structure.

Preliminary studies including desktop modelling have recently been undertaken and will form part of the information provided with the detailed brief.

Given the complexities of this work and the requirement for detailed solutions it is considered a physical model will be necessary.

The consultant shall manage the process, appoint and supervise sub-contractors as necessary to ensure physical modelling and ground investigations etc are undertaken to a level that will allow development of detailed solutions.

The estimated period for the completion of the project is 5 months, and the deadline for submission is 14 June 2012.
