MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd., a provider of essential information solutions, announced on May 16 that it has signed a contract with SNC-Lavalin Defence Programs Inc. to extend c for up to eight years for the Canadian Department of National Defence’s twelve Kingston-class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels.

MDA, an original member of the SNC-Lavalin-led team that designed and built the vessels, provided integrated ship systems, and continues to provide operational support services on both coasts.

SNC-Lavalin Defence Programs was recently awarded a competitively tendered contract to provide full In-Service Support (ISS) for the Kingston-class vessels for up to eight years as part of the overall Minor Warships Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) project.

The twelve vessels assist the Royal Canadian Navy in meeting coastal defence mandates in the area of national sovereignty, and provide the navy with a dedicated coastal defence capability. Although their primary mission is coastal surveillance, the vessels perform a wide variety of operational tasks including search and rescue, fisheries and environmental monitoring, disaster relief, mine countermeasures and scientific research.

David Hargreaves, the vice president responsible for this business said, ‘ MDA has significant expertise in providing integrated ship systems and services. This contract extends our support of SNC-Lavalin and the navy for many years to come.’

Tony Thatcher, general manager of SNC-Lavalin Defence Programs Inc . states, ‘MDA has been a significant partner in the MCDV support since 1992. We are pleased with MDA’s ability to continue to support the program in a manner that meets or exceeds our client’s expectations in this significant project.’
