Irish Marine Institute technicians installed a new weather buoy off the south coast, The Irish Times reported.
New buoy replaced the old one which broke loose in severe weather off Mizen Head.
This new model of buoy has the capacity to determine wave path and salinity ranges in water, along with temperature, wind speeds and atmospheric pressure.
Marine oceanographer Sheena Fennel deployed the M3 buoy in 180 metres of water 25 miles southwest of Bantry Bay on board the Ocean Bank vessel.
It will evaluate meteorological and oceanographic parameters to provide constant updates for weather forecasts, shipping bulletins, gale and swell alerts.
