Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC) has welcomed an extra special cruise ship into the port, marking the occasion with an exchange of commemorative plaques.
The 600-passenger Saga Sapphire was making her maiden call to Falmouth on June 30, the 14th cruise call of the year so far.
FHC chairman David Ellis and Mike Reynolds, Port Operations Director for A&P Falmouth, visited the 37,000 tonne ship while she was anchored in the Carrick Roads. They met Captain Philip Rentell, for whom it was also a special call as Falmouth is his home port.
Many of the passengers disembarked on day trips to the Eden Project, Trebah Gardens, Land’s End, Truro and Falmouth.
David Ellis, Chairman of FHC , said: “It was an honour to welcome Saga Sapphire into Falmouth and to meet the captain and crew. Seeing a cruise ship in port is always a wonderful sight and we are delighted to have been able to commemorate the visit.”
Mike Reynolds, Port Operations Director for A&P Falmouth , said: “We have had a number of calls from Saga cruise ships over the years and it is fantastic to see the Saga Sapphire in the port during her first year with the cruise line. We chatted to the captain about our hopes for the future, which he fully supported as he clearly understands what a significant boost to the local economy more cruise ship calls would be.”
