Coates Hire recently supplied a range of long distance water pumping equipment for use in constructing water treatment infrastructure for the Queensland Curtis LNG Project.

The Queensland Curtis LNG Project includes the construction of a 540km underground pipeline network linking gas fields in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland to the port city of Gladstone.

From there, gas will be piped to nearby Curtis Island where a natural gas liquefaction plant will cool the coal seam gas to form liquid natural gas, for shipping.

Part of this project is the commission of water treatment plant infrastructure. QGC engaged the GE and Laing O’Rourke consortium to engineer, procure and construct the infrastructure, which includes the Kenya Water Treatment Plant.

As a major partner in the consortium delivering the QCLNG Project, Laing O’Rourke needed to draw on a number of critical suppliers to provide vital equipment and services.

Importantly, Laing O’Rourke needed a rental supplier capable of supplying equipment across the vast geographic area encompassing the project.

One such specialist project was the need for inter-dam water transfer systems and long distance water pumping, as part of the Kenya Water Treatment Plant and at another project site at Wirribe. Coates Hire was the company chosen for the massive task.

Work on these projects commenced in November 2011 and included transporting equipment from as far afield as Coates Hire’s Mackay branch.

Samuel Jordan, Coates Hire’s Chinchilla Branch Manager explains that “because of the specialist nature of the pumping work on these particular phases of the project we called in our product specialist who looks after pumps and shoring, Tony Billingsley, from our Gold Coast branch, as well as flying in specialist technicians from Cairns to work with Tony to set up and oversee the operation’s commissioning.”
