Nordic Yards, manufacturer of innovative special ships and major maritime projects, including for the offshore industry, completed the alterations to the Arctic container ship “Talnakh” as scheduled on July 27, 2012. The Russian mining concern Norilsk Nickel had commissioned the shipyard group to carry out extensive modernisation and additional cargo capacity works.
In less than six weeks, two loading cranes had been retrofitted, a new harbour diesel generator installed and additional container supports incorporated to provide extra cargo capacity. A further addition was a shelter deck. The underwater section was grit-blasted and new preservation coatings applied. Further maintenance work was also part of the services provided by Nordic Yards. The ship left the Wismar yard on July 27.
“As with her sister ship, the ‘Norilskiy Nickel’, last year, we also managed to complete the reconstruction work on the ‘Talnakh’ on time. Cooperation with Norilsk Nickel went very smoothly,” said Fred-Günther Wegener, Senior Vice President Engineering and Production at Nordic Yards .
The “Talnakh”, which was originally delivered in 2008, is one of four type ACS 650 cargo ships built by the Wismar and Warnemünde yards for Norilsk Nickel. She sails between the Russian ports of Murmansk and Dudinka. The ice-breaking container ship can be used throughout the year in Arctic seas and is capable of breaking ice up to 1.50 metres thick.
