A researcher from the Global Change Institute, at University of Queensland, Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, stated that if the global warming continues, the rising ocean temperatures could harm coral reefs.
As reported by news.com.au, Professor Hoegh-Guldberg and fellow researchers published a paper in which they clarify that current actions will not be enough in decreasing the impact of carbon dioxide emissions on coral reefs.
The professor added: “A much broader approach to marine management and mitigation options, including shade cloth, electrical current and genetic engineering must be seriously considered”.
Another idea is to add base minerals and silicates to the ocean to neutralize acidity.
Scientists are expanding their research further, however some ideas may only prove practical at a local or regional scale.
